All for Mental Health

Background

The All for Mental Health initiative was started in 2020 in response to the negative impact the COVID-19 pandemic had had on the mental health of adolescents and young people. The initiative aims to counter the burden of mental health issues, especially among youth and adolescents, and promote mental health awareness through campaigns and other projects. The initiative was also the genesis of the "Way Forward Youth Africa" non-profit organization, which aims to drive transformational change in the African health sector through innovation and advocacy. The organization now houses the initiative and oversees the initiative’s activities on top of other projects

Our goal at All for mental health is to reduce the burden of mental illness among youth that often manifests in the skyrocketing numbers of depression, anxiety, substance abuse as well as suicidality amongst people of this age group. This is reflected in all our activities, where we e have partnered with established entities that have supported us materially and technically. In this ever-changing world, innovation and technology should be at the heart of solving the problems we face in our day-to-day lives so we are always looking for better and more efficient ways for how best we can solve the mental health debacle

What Drives us

Motivation for this Project

Goal

Champion the promotion of mental health among youth in Africa.

Vision

Have a world where no one suffers from mental ill health.

Mission

We seek to become a global organization championing mental health through the promotion of mental health awareness, providing a safe space for the victims, and ensuring access to mental health services.

Project Journey

Our journey on this quest started in July 2020 when we held our first activity which was an online mental health awareness whose impact was tracked using metrics such as the number of followers on social media platforms, engagement with posts, and the number of attendees at webinars which summed up to 160,838. Our success during the campaign is also attributed to the different partnerships with youth-led organisations in Africa expanded with statistics from Twitter binder reporting a reach of over 2 million impressions from only Twitter from July 14 2020 to November 2020. Furthermore, we also received testimonials from individuals and were able to link some young people who reached out for assistance and were linked to care. These metrics and testimonials help us understand the reach and effectiveness of our campaigns and identify areas for improvement
We have also held podcasts and webinars on mental health since the campaign. We are now running the All For Mental Health Adolescents School Project which is aimed at creating a mental health-supportive environment in secondary schools.

Project Objectives
  1. Promote awareness about mental health among youth in Africa.

  2. Support youth in Africa to cope with mental health issues positively.

  3. Make mental health services accessible and available

The Mind Your Mind Social Media Campaign

Background

This was an online social media campaign aimed at promoting mental health awareness among youth, especially university students. The project was created in response to the COVID-19 pandemic’s negative impact on the mental health of people worldwide. The campaign was run on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp and it involved youth from all over Africa. The activities included a cardboard poster campaign where participants share messages of hope to the world, a webinar series with experts to educate the youth, break myths, and share quick interventions to mental health emergencies, and peer-led WhatsApp group chats to offer help to struggling individuals. It was a sounding success in collaboration with various mental health organizations all over Africa including; Tubonge in Kenya, the Nectar Project in Nigeria, the Health Drive in Uganda, the Haven Project in Uganda, and the Girls for Girls initiative in Kenya. The Mind Your Mind Project was the first one under All for Mental Health and it birthed the organisation Way Forward Youth Africa.

All for Mental Health Adolescent Schools’ Project

Background

This was a research and implementation project aimed at promoting a mental health-safe school environment. The project was created in response to the inadequate mental health support in school systems whose necessity was amplified post the COVID-19 pandemic given the negative impact it had had on adolescents’ mental health. The project is running in 4 secondary schools in central Uganda. Some of the activities being conducted include; a baseline survey to assess the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of the students and staff towards mental health as a way to inform the subsequent planned sensitization and awareness activities, capacity building of staff and students to identify and link students with mental health issues to appropriate care and treatment and creation of mental health clubs in these schools to advocate for better mental health support. The mental health clubs are to constitute a sustainable project that will continue even after the project.
